Death and the Maiden, in this case, refers to a painting by Surrealist Dorothea Tanning from 1952. The image is based off the motif of paintings from Renaissance Germany, frequently given the same title, Death and the Maiden. The image by Tanning addresses the mysterious darkness that grabs us by the ankles from time to time. Tanning’s painting teaches us not that “life is short as is the proud beauty of a woman” but more importantly that life is a neverending, spooky dream where beauty dies hard and fast.

The maiden: twenty-something college grad living her spooky dream on a purple island, in a red state, somewhere in the midwest section of the land of oppurtunity.

Status of the Maiden: Still looking for the beauty. S’not dead yet.
